What to Expect from your Child Dentist by Melinamenny
A parent is often instructed on the right shots, inoculations and other medications for protecting their young children from diseases and ill health, but not many are aware of the need to visit a child dentist early on in the child’s life. Remarkably, infant teeth actually start forming even before baby’s birth. Primary teeth or deciduous teeth are also referred to as baby teeth and milk teeth in common terminology. The first teeth to emerge through the gums are the lower central incisors, followed by the upper central incisors. By the age of three, your baby should have a set of 20 milk teeth. They play a critical role in the young infant’s development. Since primary teeth guide the permanent teeth into place, their spacing and proper growth are important for development of the jaw and permanent teeth.
A child dentist would be able to analyze the health and alignment of baby’s teeth early on. If the infant fails to grow some primary teeth of loses them prematurely, the pediatric dentist might advise the use of a space maintainer to allow the natural space to remain open, in absence of which other teeth will tilt towards this space and cause the permanent teeth to grow in crooked. The first visit to a child dentist could be anytime between the eruption of the first milk tooth to the baby’s first birthday. A child dentist will also investigate the baby’s mouth for signs of baby bottle decay. Tooth decay in small infants is usually a result of baby bottle decay. This condition can be minimized or eliminated if the baby is not allowed to breast feed before bedtime or fall asleep with a bottle of formula in his or her mouth. If the infant demands, allow the baby to fall asleep with a bottle of plain water or pacifier. Do not fill the bottle with formula or sugary fluids as these fluids are prime culprits for tooth decay in the baby. As the child grows, encourage good diet that keeps teeth healthy. Calcium rich yoghurts, vegetables and fruit are good for teeth. Your pediatric dentist would suggest the many preventive measures you can take to avert tooth decay and cavities in your child’s teeth.
The child dentist will also be able to identify the need for orthodontic treatment at a later stage. The American Association of Orthodontists advises the first orthodontic evaluation should occur around the age of seven. Requirement of orthodontic treatment would be recommended from your child dentist. Sarasota residents can consult their pediatric dentist to prevent bruxism and baby bottle decay in their infants.
